Introducing our… Alzheimer's Cafes

…where those with memory loss and their families can find recognition, support, and acceptance.

Starting September 2011, the goal of this free monthly event is to provide a relaxed, accepting social environment with music, snacks, information, and the chance to meet and converse with others in similar situations.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a community-based, non-profit organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of local volunteers and partner families.  These houses are then sold to the partner family at no profit, and financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages. 

Habitat for Humanity HRM / Annapolis Valley is looking for families that need affordable housing, with the ability to repay a no-interest mortgage and a willingness to partner with them.  If you or someone you know fit this criteria please check their website (www.habitatav.com) for more information or to register as a volunteer.  You can also pick up an application form in the New Minas office.

 

Environmental Home Assessment Program

The Environmental Home Assessment Program (EHAP) is available in all areas of Nova Scotia until March 31, 2012.  Homeowners with onsite septic systems and private wells can request a free environmental home assessment by calling
1-800-500-3427. The service is funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and delivered by non-profit organizations providing environmental education.  Homeowners can contact Clean Nova Scotia at 1-800-665-5377 to book your FREE assessment in HRM, Hants, Guysborough, Antigonish, Pictou Cumberland, Colchester counties.

During the EHAP assessment, Clean Nova Scotia staff will meet with the homeowner at their home for approximately and hour and a half.  The homeowner will receive information on how to manage their septic system and well water quality and how to inspect their oil tank.  All information obtained during an EHAP assessment is confidential.

Home owners who participate in the EHAP assessment are eligible for a $100 septic tank pumping rebate.  Those who meet certain eligibility criteria may also apply for a grant of up to $3,000 from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment’s Septic Repair Grant Program.

New minas Fire Department

Now Recruiting Firefighters

Due to the rapid growth now taking place in New Minas, more volunteers are required to provide the emergency requirements for residents and businesses in the New Minas Fire Department fire district.

firetruckBeing a member of this fire department will bring you personal rewards and satisfaction, raise self-esteem, and provide you with a tremendous sense of accomplishment and pride for a job well done. It will provide your community with a needed service that has the potential to touch us all. The services provided by our volunteers is truly valuable to the citizens and businesses we serve.

We also offer to you a small honorarium, free vehicle license plates, and a $500.00 provincial income tax rebate.

If interested you may contact any New Minas firefighter or come into the fire hall and pick up an Application and a "Prospects Guide to Joining".

If you become one of us, you'll share challenges, camaraderie, and when we're successful, a sense of accomplishment second to none.
