THE LOUIS MILLETT COMMUNITY COMPLEX
The parking lot is paved, the gym floor is finished and the Louis Millett Community Complex is open for business!
After over 2 years of planning, New Minas’ beautiful multi-purpose complex is in operation. Construction was carried out by Roscoe Construction to Commission specifications and it is a project we are very proud of!
Village Staff has been booking the different rooms over the past three or four months. We have a beautiful gymnasium, complete with a walking track around the perimeter. There is a 4,500 square foot Civic Center next to an amazing fully-equipped commercial kitchen. There are seven multi-purpose rooms on the back side of the center, five with 700 square feet of space, and two with 350 square feet of space. There is a 730 square foot, Fitness room, which is equipped with treadmills, elliptical machines, a rowing machine, an exercise center, and stationary bike equipment. There is a small music room which is just “itching” to be filled with new (and/or gently used) music equipment for future lessons and booked time. The Complex is also the home of the New Minas Lions Club, and rooms designated for youth and senior’s organizations. The Village offices are also located in the new facility. The building has a state of the art geo-thermal heating and cooling system, and every attempt has been made to insure the building is as green as possible within budget.
The cost of this facility will be just over $4M once completed, and the Louis Millett Trust has donated $1.75M towards the construction and equipment. The Village will have funded $1.2M on its own, the County of Kings is funding $500,000 over ten years, and the Village received a grant for $100,000 from Health Promotion Nova Scotia towards the gymnasium. Furthermore, we have an on-going fundraising campaign. So far, we have thankfully received donations from Tim Horton’s, Wal-Mart, Video World, and Kings Fiddlers. Obviously, the operation of this facility will be dependent on tax dollars and rentals and user pay schedules. Staff feels that our rental fees and drop in fees are very reasonable and will provide much-needed operating revenue to ensure the facility is self-sustaining.

Village of New Minas and Louis Millet Recreation Trust Facility Project
The Village Commission of New Minas is pleased to announce the awarding of a $3.1m design-build contract, for a new recreation facility in New Minas, to a local contractor, Roscoe Construction.
It is expected the construction of this facility, to be located at Lockhart Ryan Park, will commence early in the fall and will be completed in approximately nine months.
