The Village of New Minas will be hosting a new sanctioned event for the 2008 Apple Blossom Festival to be included and promoted in this year’s 76th Annual Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival “Our Future Blossoms.”

The popular event will be for the Senior age group (50+). The event is called Sentimental Journey “Apple Blossom” and is a social and a dance for seniors (50+) with Loran Fevens.

The dance will be held Tuesday, May 27 at the New Minas Volunteer Fire Hall from 6:30 to 9:30 pm and is expected to sell out by attracting 180 seniors from the Annapolis Valley and Province.

Seniors 50 plus from the Annapolis Valley are invited to join Loran Fevens, AVR Morning Show Host of On the Rebound Program (January 1964 to December 1974), for a night out of Sentimental Journey music of yesteryear with friends and a chance to meet new friends!

Loran will play their favourite music from years past and will delightfully accept requests from participants. Sentimental Journey is a show Loran started almost six years ago on CHTN in Charlottetown.

It's now carried on five radio stations in various parts of Canada - CJLS-FM, Yarmouth; Seaside-FM in Eastern Passage, serving the Halifax/Dartmouth area; Coast 89.7 FM in Glace Bay, serving most of Cape Breton; CFCO in Chatham, Ontario, covering south western Ontario, most of Michigan and parts of Ohio; and CHON-FM in Whitehorse, Yukon, providing service to all of the Yukon Territory and parts of northern B.C.

Loran started the program as a result of his 19 years of work with the Communications Division of the head office of Veterans Affairs in Charlottetown.

He created and managed a project to record broadcast-quality video interviews with Canada's veterans.

Over a four-year period, he gathered 1,800 hours of interviews with about 850 veterans from coast to coast.

During those four years, time and time again he heard veterans remark to him, "We never hear our music anymore."

The program was intended to fill that need. Segments of the interviews done with the veterans can be viewed on the

Veterans Affairs website (www.vacacc.gc.ca) under the heading "Heroes Remember." The project won the federal government's gold medal last year for Securing and Managing Information Assets.

Seniors may want to listen to their favourite oldies all night or the dance floor will be open all night for participants who wish to dance the night away!

The Village of New Minas Recreation Department will be providing a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, sweets and refreshments (tea and coffee) for all in attendance. No alcoholic beverages will be served at anytime.

The fee is only $10 to register.

Participants must register with the New Minas Recreation Department at 681-6577 by May 23rd.

Loren Fevens, Sentimental Journey, and Vince Forrestall, New Minas Recreation Director, feel that this new event as part of the Annual Apple Blossom Festival for the Senior 50 plus age group will be so successful and appreciated by the senior age population in the Valley as 63 participants took part in the Sentimental Journey “Fall Harvest” held last October 25, 115 participants took part in the December 13 “Christmas” and 89 participated in the Annual New Minas Winter Carnival (Feb. 21, 2008).

For further information, or to register, please contact the New Minas Recreation Department at 681-6577.
