NEW Spring 2008 Ladies Step Aerobics & Stability Ball Circuit Program

The Village of New Minas Recreation Department is offering a NEW Spring 2008 Ladies Step Aerobics & Stability Ball Circuit Program which will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday Mornings 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. @ the New Minas Civic Centre STARTING MAY 5/08

and

Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday Evenings 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. @ Evangeline Middle School (EMS) Cafeteria starting Monday, April 28th.

Participants are asked to bring their steps, stability ball and weights if they have them, or they’ll be provided.

New Minas Spring Ball Hockey Program


New Minas Recreation will be offering a Spring Ball Hockey Program.

The program is for ages 6-12 and will take place @ Lockhart & Ryan Memorial Park Basketball Court on Mondays & Thursdays 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. from April 28th until June 26th. Fee to register is only $25.00 and includes a new participant t-shirt.

There will also be a NEW MINAS CUP Ball Hockey Tournament on Saturday, June 7th as part of “Terry Fox Marathon of Memories” Family Fun Day @ LRP from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm for ages 6-8; 1:00 – 3:00 pm for ages 9-12 and includes a free b-b-q.


 

Grades 7 & 8 Boys & Girls Instructional Volleyball Program

Who:               Grade 7 & 8 Boys & Girls.

Fee:                Only $30 each.

Where:            New Minas Elementary School Gymnasium

Instruction is with qualified coaches and competitive high school students. The program is open to Grade 7 and 8 boys who want to improve their skills and to play competitive volleyball.

Born to Swing Development Golf Academy Highlights Winter & Spring 2008 b-Active Programs

The New Minas Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for its upcoming b-Active Winter & Spring Programs 2008. Registrations are accepted at the New Minas Civic Centre or the Recreation Office at Lockhart & Ryan Memorial (681-6577) Park Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Born to Swing Development Golf Academy

76 participants grades primary to 8 are developing their golf game year round with our NEW Fall / Winter & Spring 2007-08 instructional and Development Academy. New registrants will now be put on a waiting list.

CPGA pros from Ken-Wo Golf Course, Dan Fraser and Derek MacKinnon instruct full swing, chipping, putting and sand traps, while Dave Harris is the Academy Coordinator. The Department has invested in new indoor golf equipment for the program.

Better than street hockey – there are no cars in floor hockey. This program is ideal for boys and girls ages 12 and under. Players of all size, skill level, and athletic ability are welcome. This program uses plastic sticks and a soft ball. Registration is limited, so register early to avoid disappointment. We had 20 participants in the Fall!

The New Minas Volleyball Academy is designed for children, girls and boys in Grades 4, 5 & 6 to increase their physical activity levels, have fun learning, improve their volleyball skills, meet new and old friends in a safe environment.

This unique program in the introduces participants to volleyball. The program is structured to teach volleyball skills in a way that is appropriate by adapting or modifying the game to meet their needs. Each day, participants get an opportunity to use their developing skills in a variety of modified games and game like situations. Dave Harris, experience program coordinator/instructor, will lead, instruct and work on instructing fitness, conditioning, skills, drills, modified games, volleyball skill review, games and other activities. Dave and his leaders are experienced, enthusiastic and committed to providing a fun, skilled and competitive environment for participants to learn volleyball skills and fundamentals so they can enjoy the experience of playing the sport.

Badminton, meanwhile, is the world’s fastest growing sports, inexpensive and lots of fun to play. This exciting new program for will teach and instruct the basic fundamentals. The concentration will be on sports development; explore new strokes, strategy and footwork. Participants will be provided a racquet if they do not have one to participate. The program will be led by Certified Badminton Instructor John DeKoe

The New Minas Recreation Department, along with its partners, is implementing at New Minas Elementary School a program that will provide a safe place for children to be after school while encouraging physical activity, leisure, recreation, healthy eating, social skills (meeting new and old friends), teamwork, competitive and non-competitive activities and discipline. A strong program will represent tremendous hope for the students and community. The New Minas Recreation Department, supported by its partners (Nova Scotia Health Promotion & Protection, Healthy Promoting Schools and New Minas Elementary School) is committed to improving the lives of children in the community by operating an affordable after school program offering enrichment and recreation in a safe and supervised environment. Activities will include: sports and recreation games and activities, Arts & crafts, dance, active and passive games, indoor and outdoor games (weather permitting), parachute, field trips, special events, fitness, guest speakers, dance revolution, etc.

Playing sports regularly can be a great way of staying healthy and having fun at the same time. Engaging in team activities also stimulates the mind and improves your general wellness. In New Minas, we believe that sports can be played and enjoyed by all, regardless of ability or skill level. Come and participate and have some fun during our Adult co-ed Volleyball Program.

Ages 19 & up, co-ed

Fee: Only $35.00 for one night or $60.00 for both nights

Sports are not just for children and youth in New Minas! Gather your friends or meet new friends and stay active in our adult basketball program. Whether it's a casual game or a competitive game of basketball, there's always an opportunity to keep fit and have fun in this program! Also, look for our Kings County Basketball Academy (KCBA), April & May ’08, and our Little Dribblers Basketball Academy, May ’08, to return in the Spring of 2008. Further information to be promoted through County Schools.

NEW in 2008 – Table Tennis Academy

The New Minas Recreation Department is very pleased to announce another new Academy Program for the Winter 2008. A Table Tennis Academy will be held on Monday evenings, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, for eight weeks in January and February (dates: T.B.A). The fee to register is only $25.00 and will be for co-ed participants in grades 6-8. The program will be located at the Evangeline Middle School (stage area). The Program will be led by a certified Instructor.

We believe your child should have the chance to try as many new sports as possible during their early years and this program promises to do it. Participants will receive Introduction & Instruction in various sports: Little dribblers, kickers, smashers, bumpers, swingers, skippers, dancers, stick handlers, tumblers, rockers, hitters, fitters, etc.

The Program offers and introduces as many sporting opportunities to participants, grades 2-3, over the course of a year so they have a chance to play a variety of sports in a group, as a team and/or as part of skill development.

As participants get introduced to a sport (s), it will allow the children to participate in a variety of sports, increase their physical activity levels over the course of the year and will see continue this over into a life-long activity and a life of healthier lifestyles.

As children get older, they'll choose to play or participate in a sport they like, enjoy and have developed at it.

 

 

Art “for the Fun of It”

Grades Primary to 5
Saturdays, 1:00 – 2:30 pm

Come enjoy and enjoy dozens of creative arts and crafts ideas, including homemade gifts, holiday ornaments, home decorations, and more. We’ll include arts and crafts projects using paint, paper, clay, natural objects, and other materials, etc.

 


 

New Minas Fall 2007 Volleyball Development Academy Classic
 

New Minas Recreation is very pleased to announce a NEW Fall program in the Village of New Minas. It is our very own Fall Volleyball Development Academy Classic.

Who:               Grades 7 & 8, co-ed
What:              2 hours of fun volleyball each night
Where:            E.M.S (Evangeline Middle School)
When:             Sundays, 5:30 – 7:30 pm    

September 30 to December 9, 2007

Why: Increase the physical activity levels of our youth, while offering 2 hours of volleyball play and Instruction in a safe environment with new and old friends.

Fee: Only $50.00 for the entire Fall (Includes a participant t-shirt!)

Participants will enjoy 2 hours a week of skill development and game situations with our experienced staff led by Dave Harris, retired Phys. Ed teacher from New Minas.

The New Minas Recreation Department is very pleased to announce our new program again for the entire County, the Kings County Basketball Academy (KCBA) for Dynamic Athletic & Skill Development for only $50.00 ea. BRINGING YOU AND YOUR GAME TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

This program will run from September 10th to October 10th at Glooscap Elementary School (Canning-next to arena) and EMS. Registration will be held Thursday, September 6th at the Recreation Office @ Lockhart & Ryan Park from 6:00-8:00 pm. If you have registered already (post-dated cheque) you’ll be called Friday, September 7th for dates, times and groupings.

The program will be led by Head Instructor Bev Greenlaw with assistance from program coordinator Dave Harris, other adult leaders and Horton High School competitive players.

The purpose of the Academy is group instruction during the off-season and is to push young children to their maximum potential both on and off the court.

Staff will teach the game from the ground up including both basic and advanced fundamentals. Most importantly they will teach essential life skills such as commitment, hard work, enthusiasm, goal setting, etc.

The program will be for boys and girls Grades 4-12 and will be operated by the New Minas recreation Department and housed in Canning. For further information, or to register, please contact the New Minas Recreation Department @ 681-6577 or 681-6041.
