It's that time again! Provincial Volunteer Week, April 27 to May 3, 2008, and the Village of New Minas Volunteer Recognition Reception, Monday, April 28, 2008, is fastly approaching. Community groups, service clubs, arts-culture-historical groups, fire departments, Legions, auxiliaries, schools, learning centers, youth groups, women's groups, recreation and leisure groups are encouraged to nominate and invite deserving individuals to receive a Volunteer Award to recognize all of those volunteers who give so much of themselves and work selflessly to make our community so rich.

Volunteers are the vital link that holds our community together. They provide so many essential services on which we depend. The least we can do is to take the time to nominate a heart that has been at work for our overall benefit.

The 34th Annual Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony

The 34th Annual Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony will be hosted by the provincial government and coordinated by Recreation Nova Scotia Thursday, April 24, 2008 @ Halifax. This signature event will recognize more than 60 volunteers from communities throughout Nova Scotia. Special presentations will include: the Volunteer Youth Award, the Building Healthier Futures Corporate Award, the Model Volunteer Community Award and the Volunteer Family Award. The awards ceremony and dinner will be held at the Westin Hotel, Halifax. PLEASE SEE THE ABOVE FORMS.

Each year during Volunteer Week celebrations in Nova Scotia, one outstanding volunteer is honoured from each Municipality in the Province at a Gala Luncheon hosted by the Province of Nova Scotia. Last year, 2007, Holly Thompson represented the Village of New Minas.

(1.) The Village of New Minas is asking Volunteer Associations, Organization’s and Group’s to nominate a deserving New Minas Volunteer of the Year to be honoured during Volunteer Week Celebrations in Halifax April 24, 2008.

The Village of New Minas is only permitted to send one volunteer to represent the Village at the Provincial Awards and that nominee will be selected at a Village Commission meeting in Early March.

The individual selected will travel to the Provincial Awards Ceremony to receive the award on behalf of all volunteers in New Minas. The Village of New Minas will pay any expenses for the trip to Halifax. The Village of New Minas representatives will accompany the successful volunteer at the ceremony.

New Minas Volunteer Recognition Reception 2008

(2.) The Village of New Minas is also asking Associations, Organizations and Groups to invite two deserving representatives from your group to attend our Annual Village of New Minas Volunteer Recognition Reception 2008 @ the New Minas Civic Centre from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2008.

This is a local opportunity for the Village Commission to show their appreciation to individuals and community groups that have selflessly given of their time, skills and energy to build a true sense of community within the Village of New Minas.

This Reception will honour 40 individuals, as part of the Village’s “40th Anniversary”, for all their hard work and dedication to the betterment of our community.

1st Annual New Minas “Festival of Lights” 2007 Has Something for All Family Members

The 1st Annual New Minas Festival of Lights sponsored by Swimwear Hut and Raymond James, November 17, 2007 to January 1, 2008 promises to offer something for all family members to celebrate the festive season.

This new event for residents, residents of outlying communities, visitors and tourists may be one of the biggest special events the Village will host now and in the future.

The Event, with the support of the Village of New Minas and the Santa Parade Committee, was created by Stephen Bishop, long time New Minas resident and business person, along with New Minas Recreation Director Vince Forrestall.

With the Village hosting their annual festive events including the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Children’s Christmas Party and Stephen Bishop hosting a Flick the Switch and Light-up the Strip Festive Events and the Sunrise Rotary Club and the County Fair Mall hosting the Santa Parade, it was felt to include all these events and some newer ones under one umbrella to equal one big event for New Minas, with many benefits.

Stephen Bishop is looking for the Flick the Switch and Light-up the Strip events to grow over the next couple of years. He is working hard to have businesses on Commercial Street dress up and decorate their properties with Christmas Light displays that people from all over the valley and Nova Scotia will come to see. Last years Lighting Contest had 14 official entries.

The Village of New Minas has commended Stephen for his efforts to date. Everyone is invited to Come Feel the Magic

Share the Holiday Spirit Greeting Card Contest

Calling On All Young Artists

We’re very delighted to launch the 1st Annual New Minas Festival of Lights “Share the Holiday Spirit Greeting Card Contest” open to all children attending Elementary and Middle Schools. Artwork winners of this years contest will be used to develop greeting cards in which we will donate the proceeds of the card sales to a recognized charity.

This year, through the help of our young artists, we hope to launch the beginning of an Annual Event. So we now invite the children and young friends of all our Elementary and Middle Schools to pick up their paintbrushes, crayons or markers and use their creative talents on a very special project – a Holiday Season greeting card.

We invite all young artists to choose from one of the following themes: My favorite Holiday memory, Winter Wonderland or Scenes from Holiday Carols. Your entry will be on display during the New Minas Festival of Lights Winter Art Contest and Display scheduled for December 15, 2007 at the County Fair Mall, 12:00 6:00 pm.

Please submit all entries to your school on or before Friday, December 14, 2007 @ 2:00 pm.

Artwork of young artists will be chosen by our judges to create a series of Holiday Cards for 2008. Cards will be packaged in quantities of 24. Each package will contain cards of each of the chosen young artists. This package of 24 cards will be for sale for the 2008 Holiday Season and 100% of the proceeds will directly go to a chosen charity. Everyone is a Winner!
