Village of New Minas New Special Events Road Sign
(In Partnership with New Minas & Area Lions Club) Up and Running

The New Minas Recreation Department, along with its partner the New Minas & Area Lions Club, are pleased to announce that the new Village of New Minas Special Events sign located at the Lockhart & Ryan Memorial Park entrance is now up and running.
The attractive sign fits in nicely on Commercial Street promoting community activities, events and programs 24 hours, 7 days a week. The sign lights up at night and has protective cover to protect the letters.
The sign comes at a nice time in the community to replace the yellow mobile sign that was being used by the Department over the past 9 months and at a time where letters had been stolen and moved about on the mobile sign that was taking away from its purpose.
The sign is similar to Bedford`s Special Event sign located on the Bedford Highway.

New Recreation Logo Contest
The Village of New Minas is looking for a new logo to identify the Recreation Department.
The "Create a New Recreation Logo Contest" will be held to receive submissions from residents, of all ages, from July 30 to September 28 (4:30 pm deadline).
Children in the area will also have a chance to participate through our local schools throughout September.
The winner will receive $25 if the logo they created is chosen, with nothing binding the Village to accept any entry, and providing a $25 prize if a winner is declared.
Please submit your creative New Minas recreation logo suggestions to the Recreation Department in person at the Recreation office at Lockhart & Ryan Memorial Park or by e-mail at village.newminas@ns.aliantzinc.ca.

MEET YOUR NEW COMMISSIONER - MAYNARD STEVENS

Maynard Stevens was born in Canning, Kings County in 1954 and lived there for the first twenty four years of his life. He was educated at Cornwallis District High and later at Kings Tech. In the late 1970's he moved to Wolfville where he would spend the next twenty years of his life. It was in Wolfville that he first ran in a local election, trying for a seat on the town council.
Maynard and his wife Mary moved to New Minas in 1998 and have lived on Colonial Crescent since then. Maynard is a published author of the local history book, 'Where They Rest in Peace." This book along with his keen interest in local history have led Maynard to give several graveyard tours over the past five years including a large tour of the Chipmans Corner cemetery that was a fundraiser for the Kings Historical Society as well as for Centre Stage Theatre.
Maynard's desire to promote local history has led him to become a member of the Board of Directors of the Kings Historical Society, as well as one of the co-founder of the Graveyard Care Society and the New Minas Acadian Sites Heritage Committee.
He was a leader in the New Minas Lions Club for several years before leaving the club to devote his time to other community activities, still he helps out on a few of their fundraising projects. He is a avid reader and a movie buff, he enjoys classic films by some of the great film directors, like John Ford and David Lean.
Maynard is also involved with the Country Fair Mall, he makes certain that both Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are there for pictures with the children and that they are well looked after. He also plays a key role in the New Minas Santa Parade and other appearances by Santa and the bunny.
Maynard is excited by being elected to the New Minas Village Commission. " I will work at my position with all the experience that I can bring to it through my years of community service, I look forward to the challenges that await me. I love the Village of New Minas and what ever I can do to make life here better for the citizens."
Maynard and Mary Stevens have three children and five grandchildren.
